Framed textiles
I am a huge advocate of framed textiles (in fact, I have quite a few in my own home). Framing textiles can breathe new life into older pieces and celebrate them for what they truly are: artworks. They’re statement pieces, no matter their size, and can serve as either a more affordable alternative to large wall art or a way to still enjoy textiles in more compact spaces.
Suzani textiles, originating in Central Asia, are known for their intricate embroidery and symbolic motifs. My collection is curated from my travels and trusted suppliers, including both modern, vintage and antique framed suzanis. Each piece is chosen for its visual impact, condition, and story. At Suze Studio, they are transformed into framed art using modern frames and linen backing, preserving their structural integrity and character. I prefer to leave the stitching exposed, not covered by glass.
Framed modern suzanis reinterpret tradition with bold compositions and refined colours, crafted by skilled embroiderers. They add warmth and personality to any space, and offer a more pristine finish for those who prefer it.
For those drawn to history and patina (like myself), framed antique suzanis are truly special and distinctive. Each antique suzani carries decades (sometimes centuries!) of life within its threads. I always like to think about what kinds of stories could be behind the extra pen marks or 150-year-old tea stains. This gentle wear in the form of small stains, frayed edges or patched holes, softened tones, or other imperfections is part of the textile’s character. I think it’s what makes them feel layered and irreplaceable.
